Emily wakes up on the floor of an empty cell in a prison for prisoners of war. Tom approaches the bars, this time in the uniform of an enemy officer, and begins methodically asking her for information about the troops. Emily initially tries to explain to Tom who she is, which causes a fit of rage in the man, who punches the girl in the face through the bars. He leaves her in tears and hysterics, promising to talk the "stubborn soldier" through more effective means.
(G19)Emily wakes up on the concrete floor of a small, derelict-looking cell, dimly lit from a small window in the ceiling. Rising to her feet, she shakes off her clothes and hears footsteps echoing from the corridor behind the bars. As she approaches the door, she is startled by the sudden appearance of Tom in his Viet Cong uniform, accompanied by two Vietnamese soldiers.Emily- Tom? What's this all about? Let me out!
Tom- I'm talking here. Answer the questions, and maybe someday you'll come home. Is that understood? Position, unit, location. Answer!
Emily- Listen... I'm not in the military, I'm a civilian! I don't work for the army, I was just looking for someone important to me!
Tom- (sighs disappointedly) What a familiar story. I'm tired of hearing it! (strikes Emily's face through the bars with his fist) Speak!
Emily cries out from the blow and falls on her back. Blood begins to run down her face, her eyes full of tears. Emily- I'm not military! I don't understand any of this! (crying) What do you want me to say?
Tom- (in a rage) Position, unit, place! Hurry up, you bastard!
Emily only sobs hysterically in reply. Tom spits irritably on the floor, turning away from the grate.Tom- Right now I have to report to my command. But when I get back, I'll find a way to get a stubborn soldier like you to talk. Especially... (clenches fists) If someone else gets in my mood.
Tom leaves with the soldiers.Emily continues to sob. Wiping the blood away, she looks at it and thinks about it. A second memory from the past slips back into her mind. The girl rises to her feet. In the cell is a locked door with a hole for a key, and another note with John's thoughts on the torment of his fellow prisoners.
(N5)Inspecting the cell, Emily discovers a breach filled with poorly secured bricks. The player has a choice: attempt to widen the breach and escape, or await his fate.
1. Breaking her hands in blood and overcoming pain, girl tries to widen the breach and escape from the cell, but then the world suddenly turns on its side, changing the walls and the floor. The player has to move along the walls or ceiling, periodically pressing against the surface to avoid the creatures' attacks. After following a series of corridors and chambers, using the gaps in the walls, the girl reaches the exit to the prison yard, where the world assumes a normal position.
2. Emily decides to do nothing. On a hidden timer
(noise from the corridor, phrases of prisoners from neighboring cells), Tom and a couple of soldiers arrive again, who take the girl out of her cell and lead her to the interrogation cell.
(R20)Emily turns around frightened. Tom and the soldiers come to the door again, one of whom opens the cell door. Tom himself steps inside.Tom- The time has come. I think you will quickly realize that death is not the worst thing for a soldier. I suggest you start talking.
At this point, the heroine notices through the doorway to the next room how the "torturers" are beating a bloody John, after which one approaches him with a mop with a greased handle. Emily is taken further away, after which John's agonized scream is heard
(rape). The soldiers leave the heroine in the center of the interrogation room, after which they leave with a laughing Tom. In their place, the "Inquirer" boss enters the room, starting the battle. After defeating him, Emily picks up the
"Interrogation Name List" from his body and exits through a winding corridor into the prison yard.
In the prison yard, the player meets a lonely Frank standing alone, who looks friendly enough. He actually needs help, and is willing to ask anyone for it. He says that he came to terms with his imprisonment a long time ago, but he found out that he was on the interrogation name list. Life remains his last consolation, and so he asks to get the list and bring it to him. In return, he offers to get the key to John's cell for Emily, since he has seen where it is. The girl agrees.
(O21)Emily sees the figure of one of the captives near the wall and heads toward him. The man turns his head in her direction and smiles slightly.EmilyFrank- Hi. You're not supposed to be here, are you?
Emily- No. Although I'm increasingly feeling like I'm not... Who are you?
Frank- I'm Frank. Just Frank. (smirking) Who are you looking for here? You are, I can see it in your eyes.
Emily- John. John Cutler, Private... Do you know him?
Frank- I know where to find him. (examining Emily) I think you can help me in exchange for this.
EmilyFrank- You're not the shy type. What's your name?
EmilyFrank- Emil... I've been here a long time, longer than the others. They've been trying to crack me for a long time. My body doesn't even feel the pain anymore. But there's something worse. (closes eyes for a moment) I'm afraid of disappearing, afraid of death. And it's already waiting for me.
Emily- I... I'm supposed to save you?
Frank- Who knows... But the inquirer already has a list with my name on it. We're nothing to them, we only have a name... Without a name, death won't find me.
Emily- (frightened) Are you suggesting I go back to this hell again?
Frank- (smiling silently) It all depends on how far you can go.
1.
If the player chose path 1 earlier, he will have to return to the prison corridors for the list. Now, in addition to the usual creatures, the boss "The Inquirer" will be making his rounds there. After defeating him, Emily will get the list and will be able to return to Frank for the key.
(D22)Emily walks up to Frank and holds out a rolled up list to him.Frank- Didn't have to wait long for you. (takes list, unfolds) My name. It's safe now.
Emily- For how long? What happens when they put you back in?
Frank- I'll find a way out. And I'll move on. I always have.
Emily- Are you... Are you sure you're still alive?
Frank- (silent for a few seconds) It doesn't matter. What matters is that I feel alive. (pulls key) John's behind the forgotten door. If you want him so badly, you won't have to look long. Go on.
If the player followed path 2 no additional actions are required, as the list is already in the player's possession.
Back in the starting cell, Emily hesitantly opens the door of the holding cell. There she sees a battered John lying on the floor in bloody tattered clothes and tries to bring him to his senses. John struggles to speak, calling the war
"a machine that chewed up and spit out his soul without even noticing." He finally says that
"there are no heroes in war, only victims". After which he loses consciousness.
(N23) Emily looks at the key in her hand, then at the cell door. Inserting the key into the keyhole, she twists it with effort. After hesitating for a moment, she pushes the door open slowly and with a grinding sound. Emily sees a badly beaten John in blood-stained clothes, curled up on the concrete floor of the holding cell.Emily- (running up and leaning over John in horror) John! John! Are you alive? It's me, Emily! Do you remember my name?
John is silent for a few seconds, then coughs painfully.John- If... If you can call this living. Look at me... What's left of me... of my friends...
Emily- I'll get you out of here! (tries to take John's hand, but immediately lets go when she hears him groan) You're coming home!
John- Home? And who are you taking back there? (coughs) This war... The machine that chewed up and spit out my soul like thousands of others... We're not the same anymore...
Emily- You made it, didn't you... You got through it all... You survived against all odds...
John- Why... To make my father finally proud of me? No... (coughs heavily) There are no heroes in war... Only victims like the rest of us...
Emily strokes John's hair. There's blood on her palms. The girl closes her eyes, tears flowing from them.Shots and shouts come from behind the door of the cellblock, leisurely footsteps coming very close. The door slowly opens and silhouettes of armed soldiers appear behind it. At the same moment an unbearably bright light begins to shine from behind the door, and the screen goes white.
